Sky Pond and her crew dropped her anchor on the island of Nuku Hiva

Thursday 24 2022 March 2022 Day 19

After
2911 nautical miles, or, 19 days 8 hr 21min, Sky Pond and her crew
dropped her anchor on the island of Nuku Hiva, French Polynesia in
Taiohoe Bay at 16:31 today, gmt-9:30. Sky Pond now has sailed 32,911
ocean miles in six years!

When
asked each of our favorite parts of the passage, Risto enjoyed being
under fast sail for 19 days, Carl enjoyed morning coffee pow-wows, and
Roxy enjoy updating our blog and interacting with our friends and
family.

Once
anchored, Brett and Garry from Bula dinghied over and we had a little
happy hour on the bow, sharing tales of the passage. Bula set sail from
Cabo San Lucas two days ahead of us and we stayed in touch during the
passage via satellite texts.

The
peace and tranquility of our boat and home anchored in a quiet bay
tonight will be fabulous as we’re all beat and ready to crash. Despite
this, Roxy still made Alfredo sauce, salmon and pasta from scratch and a
Mediterranean salad with our remaining veggies, all washed down with a
bottle of Pino Noir.

We
cherished our time together as a well-formed team and we are deeply
appreciative of everyone who followed along. Having land based support
is one of key elements of passage morale. Do not underestimate how
important those email interactions were!

And now for a hot shower, fresh sheets, and a contiguous night’s sleep. Tattoos tomorrow!

Sea ya,

The happy crew on Sky Pond!

3) VINI 🇵🇫 FRENCH POLYNESIA DROPS THEIR RATES

South Pacific Posse burgees - Avail for Pickup in Nuku Hiva French Polynesia or Shelter Bay Panama https://pacificposse.com

Over the last year VINI the main cellphone carrier has dropped their rates drastically
lower than data in Mexico - less than 20$ for 10GB
2000 XPF for 8GB anytime + 2GB weekends.

In
French Polynesia there is Vini and Vodaphone. I think they may publish
their own coverage maps but trust them only if you will. In FP coverage
around villages that actually show up on Google maps is likely. On the
backsides of the Marquesas and other less populated areas there will
likely not be coverage.

In
the Tuamotus don't count on coverage anywhere except major villages.
Faaite, Fakarava and Rangiroa (I think it's these three) share a wifi
network you can buy into when you arrive but again coverage is not
great. Once you arrive in the Societies you will have coverage just
about everywhere. And here's the most important thing: it's $80usd for
10GB and until the Societies a lot of it is very slow 3G. Think email
and weather, not zoom calls.

11) THE ORIGINAL GUNK HOLES OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Bay of Islands. Russell, New Zealand

 is
an historic spot, dating from the early 19th century and known until
the early 1840s as Kororāreka. In the 1830s it was a lawless trading
center where whalers, seafarers and merchants mixed with adventurers,
deserters and escaped convicts from Australia.

Russel

Towering
above the township is Maiki Hill, topped by a flagstaff. In 1844–45 its
signal flagstaff was cut down by Māori four times in a protest against
the government.

This view of Kororāreka from the Bay was drawn by Captain Clayton on 10 March 1845, the day before the town was attacked by the forces of Hōne Heke and Kawiti. The ships in the foreground are the Hazard, Victoria and Matilda. The contested flagstaff can be seen at left atop Maiki Hill.

Pressures
on Māori from European settlers  Europeans settled permanently in
New Zealand and wanted to buy land for farms and houses. Most settlers
did not understand Māori land tenure processes and Māori law concepts,
or structures for social cohesion and due to these misunderstandings
many skirmishes – some quite bloody – occurred.

reaty of Waitangi was signed

On 6 February 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi / Te Tiriti o Waitangi
was signed at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands, North-land New Zealand
by Captain William Hobson, several English residents, and between
43 and 46 Māori rangatira / chiefs

Why did the British Crown want a Treaty?

The
British Government was considering establishing a form of civil
government in New Zealand because of the increasing number of British
people who were coming to live in New Zealand. However, a plan for
private settlement by the New Zealand Company forced the British
Government to act. The government instructed Captain William Hobson to
act for the British Crown in negotiating a treaty on the grounds that it
was necessary to obtain Māori consent before establishing any form of
government.

Reasons
why chiefs signed the treaty included wanting controls on sales of
Māori land to Europeans, and on European settlers. They also wanted to
trade with Europeans, and believed the new relationship with Britain
would stop fighting between tribes

El Dios del Queso - day 19 update

Thu Mar 31 2022

Still
heading on a course of 280 to stay with the 1.5kn current. we’ll alter
to a westerly course maybe tomorrow, then sail a direct 260 course to
Marquesas. Our ETA is still likely the 11th of April. Our day’s tally is
164nm, and overall distance to date 2552nm, with approx. 1545nm
remaining.

Day
19 presented a lovely blue sky and good sailing conditions. Skipper ran
the watermaker and I took the opportunity to rinse some clothes after
washing them in seawater. The steady wind allowed us to fly the spinny
for a few hours, but when the clouds appeared, we took it, and the
washing, down - with only one on watch it’s not worth the hassle if the
winds increase. The wind did increase and we had a drop of rain, so
dousing it was a good idea. Riding the current we’re still zipping along
between 6-7kn.

And
a bit of good news. Buried beneath meats in various stages of expiry,
jars of garlic and curry paste, and a half-tube of Sikaflex 291, a lone
sealed packet of New Zealand Anchor cheddar cheese! The cheese God has
smiled upon me…

All is well out here. Hope it’s good where you are.

4) KAVA

KAVA can be purchased at local markets in Fiji.

Nice weather window approaching so gonna take some time to go visit a few of the outer islands, time to go to the market and stock up on kava...

KAVA

It is tradition to present the leader or village chief with a Kava root, which you can find at any Fijian market. This will show your true understanding of the Fijian culture and the significance of the kava ceremony.

The kava ceremony focuses around the communal Kava tanoa (bowl). Guests sit in a circle around the bowl which is placed in front of the leader . The ceremony commences with the actual production of the Kava. The plant is pounded and the pulp placed into a cloth sack and mixed with water. The end result is a brownish colored liquid – the Kava gold. It is then strained and ready for drinking and consumed by the visitors and the village chief and his entourage.

KAVA CEREMONY ETIQUETTE

In Fiji, a kava ceremony is a ritual in many remote villages. Fijian families and friends gather together and enjoy Kava together. It is what Fijians commonly refer to as 'Fiji time'. You can ask for a full coconut shell or half shell.

KAVA

Kava aka yaqona, aka grog, is the traditional drink in Fiji. It is a mildly narcotic and sedative drink made from the crushed root of the yaqona (pronounced yang-GO-na) strained with water. It is served in a large communal bowl as part of the traditional kava ceremony. When you drink it it morphs into a pleasant, numb feeling around the mouth, lips and tongue, as well as a sense of calm and relaxation.

You can ask for a full or half coconut shell

Despite the naturally calming effects of the drink, the true experience lies in partaking in the ceremony. Kava is traditionally served as part of a ceremonial atmosphere, most commonly in welcoming guests into a village or on important occasions.

Kava Bowl Serving

"Kaivalagi" is a Fijian word meaning someone "from the land of the foreigners." Its antonym, kaiviti, means "someone from Fiji." It is often used instead of the word "vulagi", meaning foreigner or stranger.

5) CYCLONE HOLES IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC

Mangrove lined rivers are the ultimate cyclone holes as these 4-5 foot mangroves absorb the energy of strong winds.

Zazoo

Anchorages on the North coasts in South Pacific Islands are more susceptible to surge and devastation. In the Southern hemisphere tropical storms are called cyclones and rotate in a clockwise direction.

The ships in the harbour all started a mad scramble to make themselves safe and to get steam up to head out to sea to ride out the Cyclone. The Calliope managed to get steam up and to sail out of the harbour into the teeth of the cyclone. The Calliope was making a 1-knot headway against the cyclone as she steamed up the harbour.

efforts to show the world that Fiji is open for tourism, we are very
excited to announce that you can once again clear into Fiji at Vuda

The
government has made it as simple, yet as safe, as possible. You will
require a rapid antigen test (RAT) before you depart and a second RAT on
arrival. These tests only take 15 minutes and once you have received
your negative arrival test, you are free to go. No more quarantine
(assuming you took more than 3 days to get here)!

And as a reminder, your yacht can now stay in Fiji for up to 5 years!!!

To
arrange clearance with us, please send an email to

can ensure your arrival experience is as effortless as possible. There
is slightly more per-departure paperwork that is needed but nothing too

Pilot Charts are worried about cruising conditions, there is a diagram for every month of the ear for each section.

Every
one of these locales have a graph for every month over many many years.
You can in this way utilize the graph to find out about the breezes and
flows in every month.

On each Month’s Pilot Chart are Wind-roses
of winning breezes – indicating both bearing and intensity and
probability of winds. Likewise appeared on each outline are the flows
and tempests for the 12 months recorded.

edge age, this information was gathered from ships afloat, by sections
into the boat’s log and onto diagrams. It was first accumulated,
physically, into an organized  framework by Lieut. M. F. Maury,
U.S. Naval forces who examined a large number of boats’ logs and
diagrams in the mid 1800s to make the data accessible to ships
underway.

EXPLANATION OF WIND ROSES ON PILOT CHARTS :

The wind roses in blue color are located in the center of each 5° square on the surface of the Earth

Each rose shows the distribution of the winds that have prevailed in the area over a considerable period of time.

The wind percentages are summarized for calm and for the Cardinal and Inter cardinal compass points.

The arrows fly with the wind, indicating the direction from which the wind blew. |

The
length of the shaft, measured from the outside of the circle to the end
of the visible shaft (not necessarily to the end of the last feather),
using the appropriate scale below, gives the percentage of the total
number of observations in which the wind has blown from that direction.

The
number of feathers shows the average force of the wind on the Beaufort
scale. The figure in the center of the circle gives the percentage of
calms. When the arrow is too long (over29 percent) to fit conveniently
in the 5° square, the percentage is indicated numerically on the shaft.

Windroses

The sample wind rose should be read thus:

In the reported observations the wind has averaged as follows:

N. 32 percent, Beaufort force 5;

N.E. 11 percent, Beaufort force 4;

E. 8 percent, Beaufort force 4;

S.E. 4 percent, Beaufort force 4:

S. 3 percent, Beaufort force 4 ;

S.W. 5 percent,Beaufort force 4;

W. 10 percent, Beaufort force 4;

N.W. 25 percent, Beaufort force 4;

Calms 2 percent.

POLLYWOGS
No
one is really sure when or how the Line Crossing Ceremony, "Order of
Neptune", came about. The ritual dates back at least 400 years in
Western seafaring.

The
ceremony observes a mariner's transformation from slimy Pollywog, a
seaman who hasn't crossed the equator, to trusty Shellback, also called a
Son or Daughter of Neptune. It was a way for sailors to be tested for
their seaworthiness.

When
a ship crosses the equator, King Neptune comes aboard to exercise
authority over his domain and to judge charges brought against Pollywogs
that they are only posing as sailors and haven't paid proper homage to
the god of the sea.

High
ranking members of the crew and those who have been Shellbacks the
longest dress up in elaborate costume and each play the part of King
Neptune's court. For instance, the ship's captain might play the part of
King Neptune himself. What proceeds is a day of festivities, which
builds camaraderie among the seafaring crew.

Mt Yasur

Mount
Yasur is a volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu, 1,184 ft high above sea
level. It has been erupting nearly continuously for several hundred
years, although it can usually be approached safely. Its eruptions,
which often occur several times an hour.

The
glow of the volcano was apparently what attracted Captain James Cook on
the first European journey to the island in 1774. Today, the mountain
is a sacred area for the John Frum cargo cult. Members of the cult
revere John Frum, a deified messenger who foretold the bringing of
wealth to the island by American forces, and believe he resides in Mount Yasur with his countrymen.

Kastom is
a pidgin word (Bislama/English) used to refer to traditional culture,
including religion, economics, art and magic in Melanesia.

The
word derives from the Australian English pronunciation of custom.
Kastom is mostly not written only passed down through teachings and
stories. It is concentrated through:

• Kastom House - sites where objects and rituals are stored.

• Kastom stories - myths, legends and communal histories.

• Kastom tabu - objects of special power, significance and symbolism.

There are designated Kastom villages in Vanuatu which are open to tourists, dedicated to preserving Kastom.

4) MEET THE ITCZ
AKA THE DOLDRUMS

The Intertropical Convergence Zone

The Intertropical Convergence Zone, known by sailors as the doldrums or the
calms because of its monotonous windless weather, is the area where the
northeast and the southeast trade winds converge. It hovers near the
thermal equator and its specific position varies seasonally

he Intertropical Convergence Zone played a role in the loss of Air France Flight 447

Our strategy was to bring enough diesel andready to motor for up to 600 nm.

Since it's pulsates and is hard to pinpoint we eventually turned on the
engines in the fading winds below 4 knots of SOG and motored for 425 nm
~2.5  days to get through it

HOt

In addition to heat and glass like conditions it does bring the danger of squalls, and quite strong ones too.

Microburtst

The ITCZ area  can even create micro burst which are very intense and
played a role in the loss of Air France Flight 447 in May of 2009

Squall

Squalls are easily visible on radar and the sky itself ( less so at night ) and
their general direction can be tracked. The only time we diverted from
our rhumb line course was to avoid squalls

Squall

Even when the ITCZ is present, however, it is constantly moving and changing
in intensity. It varies from 3° N to 10° N. It can be anywhere from 50
to 300 miles wide. The dousing we got with one of these squalls was also
a welcoming source of delicious fresh water and clean decks.

SHAKA

SHAKA The Dark History of Hawai‘i’s Iconic Hand Gesture

The ‘shaka’ or ‘hang loose’ gesture likely originated from island plantations’ brutal working conditions.

Hawaii

Go to any surfing beach today and you’d be hard-pressed not to find someone throwing a “shaka” hand—thumb and pinkie extended, three middle fingers curled against the palm. The iconic gesture, sometimes referred to as a “hang ten” or “hang loose,” has traveled far from its Hawai‘i origins. Today, American presidents, London nightclub goers, and even the emoji keyboard all sport the shaka hand.

Saa Tamba, owner of Tamba Surf Company on Kaua‘i, has been throwing shakas his whole life. “It’s just, from my perspective, a way of saying hi, a way of saying goodbye, and spreading some good spirit, you know, the eternal spirit of aloha,” he says. Tamba is quick to clarify that the shaka isn’t a wave. “You’re kind of like throwing it out there, you know, to your friend or someone away in the distance. So they’re kind of like catching the shaka,” he says. Tamba throws different shakas for different reasons. There’s the casual, one-handed shaka and there’s the “strong,” double-handed shaka for flagging someone down at a crowded concert, or saying hello to a friend you haven’t seen in a while.

The shaka hand grew in popularity across Hawai‘i in the mid-20th century thanks in part to used car salesman David “Lippy” Espinda, who was the first to link the gesture to the word—which is not actually Hawaiian in origin, but more likely Japanese. As a sign-off for his 1960s television ads, Espinda would throw a shaka and then say his catchphrase: “shaka, brah!” In the 1970s and 1980s, the gesture also featured prominently in reelection campaign ads for Frank Fasi, Honolulu’s longest-serving mayor. While Fasi and Espinda helped make the shaka hand more recognizable in Hawai‘i, surfing’s surge in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s helped export the gesture abroad. As Tamba puts it, “surfing spread it more than anything else.”

But the origins of where the shaka hand came from are far murkier than its global rise to emoji-keyboard stardom. One of several versions of the story suggests the gesture originated with early Spanish explorers asking for a drink. Another claims it came from mid-19th-century Chinese immigrants using the gesture to signify the number six.

However, according to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the prevailing origin story goes back about a century to Hawaiian plantation worker Hamana Kalili. His job was to feed sugar cane stalks into the rollers of a machine that would squeeze out the cane’s sweet juice. One day, Kalili’s hand got caught in the rollers and he ended up losing his three middle fingers. The company, the Kahuku Sugar Mill, gave him a new job as a security guard; every time he waved, he’d make what’s now known as the shaka hand. From there, local children mimicked and spread the gesture.

Accidents like Kalili’s certainly happened on Hawaiian plantations, perhaps even fairly often. “You know, there must be dozens of people with three fingers missing in the middle of the hand,” says historian Mike Mauricio of the Hawai‘i Plantation Village. While we know Kalili actually existed, Mauricio is unconvinced there’s enough evidence that he specifically originated the gesture.

University of Lisbon’s Cristiana Bastos, principal investigator of the Colour of Labour: the Racialized Lives of Migrants, agrees that Kalili’s role in originating the gesture is uncertain—but says the story is about more than one individual. While the story is “mythic,” she says, Kalili’s tragic tale serves as a reminder of a time “where plantations were very important” in Hawai‘i. The role of Indigenous Hawaiians in plantation history is often overlooked, Bastos adds. Ironically, the modern, feel-good shaka gesture is, in some ways, one of the echoes of that little-known, often brutal chapter of Hawaiian history.

When Hawai‘i’s plantations got going in the late 1800s, countless workers endured terrible conditions to grow and harvest “white gold,” or sugar cane, a “very sharp, unforgiving plant,” says Nicholas B. Miller, assistant professor at Florida’s Flagler College and a former researcher at the Colour of Labour project. The grim day-to-day working conditions only degraded further when harvest approached. Sugar cane fields would be set on fire to burn away the plants’ leaves, exposing the sugar-bearing stalk for easier collection. During these mass burns, Miller says, the fields “would look like the pits of hell were opening up.”

Kalili’s work at the plantation, both before and after his accident, which occurred around 1917, reveals one aspect of plantation history that’s often overlooked: the role of Indigenous Hawaiians as laborers well into the 20th century. “What’s really interesting about [the Kalili] legend is that it implies that a native Hawaiian was involved in the sugar economy well after native Hawaiians are not really seen as part of that world,” Miller says. Instead, historians often focus on the migrant contract workers coming to Hawai‘i, “sometimes not mentioning that there were Indigenous Hawaiians, too,” says Bastos.

In the opening decades of the 20th century, thanks to an influx of immigrants, plantation laborers became a far more diverse population. Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Norwegians, Koreans, Filipinos, Russians, and Puerto Ricans all came to find work in the sugar economy. As the islands’ population expanded in both size and diversity, Miller says the society was split into haole people—white outsiders who ran the plantations—and “locals,” which essentially encompassed everyone else. With foreign-born plantation workers considered as “local” as Hawaiians, the centuries-long history of the islands’ Indigenous community became increasingly overlooked, just one more ingredient in what has been popularly presented as a harmonious melting pot of diversity.

“If you look from the perspective of Indigenous Hawaiians who were dispossessed and who were not called in that celebration [of diversity] in equal terms, or in the terms that they would want for themselves because they were there beforehand,” says Bastos, “then you don’t get to see this as harmoniously.”

Whether or not Kalili was the originator of the shaka gesture ultimately doesn’t matter. Even apocryphal stories can reveal important truths about who we are, and remind us of forgotten histories. His tragic accident shows us that Indigenous Hawaiians had a greater presence in the islands’ plantation history than is often acknowledged.

So the next time you see a surfer—or an American president—throw a shaka, remember there is some deep history behind what Tamba, like most people, think of as “just a good way of spreading good vibes.”
