A
new South Pacific Posse is forming over the next few months. For many
it’s been in the planning stages for years, for others it will be a spur
of the moment to participate. A 3,000+nm ocean crossing and subsequent
4,000+ nm of island hopping will be the future for some of the most
adventurous sailors in the world.
Our
mission is to support you in this endeavor with facts, seminars,
up-to-date information, tracking, shared experiences, communications and
create a self-supportive fleet.
The South Pacific Posse has no set schedule. Join whenever you are ready. Most vessels will leave from the Americas between February and April.
It
is not a race, there is no prize for being fastest. We value your
safety, your happiness and the ability to proceed further too much, to
put you in such time-based predicaments.
Making landfall in paradise will be your ultimate reward and will change your life forever.
Please hoist your South Pacific Posse burgees.
– Captain Dietmar

14) THE ACCURACY OF A CLOCK
John Harrison’s
H4 marine chronometer holds a significant place in maritime history,
marking a pivotal moment in the age of exploration and navigation.
Challenge Prior
to the H4, determining longitude at sea was hazardous and imprecise.
The inability to accurately gauge a ship’s east-west position led to
numerous maritime disasters. Harrison’s invention directly addressed
this critical issue.
Innovation Harrison’s
H4 chronometer was a groundbreaking invention in the 18th century. It
was the first timekeeping device accurate enough to be used for
calculating longitude at sea, a problem that had plagued sailors for
centuries.
Details
The H4 differed greatly from its predecessors (H1, H2, H3) in design
and functionality. It was much smaller, resembling a large pocket watch,
and utilized a fast-beat balance wheel that significantly improved its
accuracy.
Longitude Prize
Harrison’s work was partly motivated by the Longitude Act of
1714, which offered a substantial prize for anyone who could devise a
practical method for precisely determining a ship’s longitude. The
creation and success of the H4 were instrumental in Harrison eventually
claiming this prize.
Impact The
H4 didn’t just solve a navigational problem; it revolutionized
long-distance sea travel, making it safer and more reliable. This had
profound implications for global trade, exploration, and the expansion
of empires.
Display Today,
Harrison’s H4 chronometer is often showcased in museums as a testament
to human ingenuity and the quest to master the oceans. Its story
continues to inspire and fascinate those interested in maritime history
and the science of navigation.
Harrison presented the H1 in 1735
